    What is Executive Coaching?

Founder to watch award - Michael Vincent UK executive coaching expert

Executive coaching is a confidential, structured, and results-focused partnership between a senior leader and an experienced executive coach. It gives you an independent space to think clearly, test ideas, work through leadership challenges and take purposeful action.

Unlike generic training, executive coaching is tailored specifically to your role, your leadership context and the pressures you face.

I am also happy to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) where appropriate. Many executive coaching clients value this as part of building trust and allowing complete openness from the outset.

Our executive coaching sessions delve deep into your specific leadership style, current challenges, aspirations, and the unique dynamics of your working environment. An executive coaching consultant is there to provide a fresh perspective, ask powerful questions, and offer tools and frameworks that help you unlock solutions and implement them effectively.

    Executive coaching and leadership coaching

While often used interchangeably, leadership coaching generally refers to coaching for individuals at various levels of leadership, from emerging leaders to senior executives. Executive coaching, specifically, is geared towards individuals in high-level positions – C-suite, senior management, and those identified as critical to an organisation’s strategic direction.

Both share the core principles of fostering growth, enhancing performance, and achieving professional objectives, but executive coaching often addresses more complex strategic challenges, organisational impact, and executive presence at the highest levels.

Ultimately, whether you’re seeking executive coaching or broader leadership coaching, the goal remains the same. To help you navigate complex business, gain greater clarity, confidence, and capability, driving exceptional results for yourself and your organisation.

My different roles have taken me all over the world, and I have been fortunate to have achieved much success through my career.

Before establishing Strategic Goal Management, I held several senior leadership positions across demanding and complex environments:

    Managing Director, Essex SME company
Led transformational improvement and significant company growth, from a failing company to a multi-million-pound turnover. I received recognition as a finalist for Business Leader of the Year SME at the Ex-Forces in Business Awards.

    Head of Operations, Pinnacle Power
Managed a state-of-the-art energy centre in North Greenwich as part of one of Europe’s largest district heating networks, with a project value of circa £87m.

Managed one of Amazon’s busiest delivery stations and led the UK launch of Amazon Fresh while turning around a struggling operation.

    British Army Air Corps
Served for nearly 17 years, including operational deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where I developed and applied leadership under pressure while managing complex Apache ground operations.

This background shapes how I coach: calm under pressure, commercially aware, and focused on helping leaders make better decisions in real-world situations.

I am a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute with a first-class honours degree in Leadership and Management. Furthermore, I am a member of the Association for Project Management, the Institute of Leadership and Management, and a technical member of IOSH. Our Approach to Executive Coaching

At Strategic Goal Management, our executive coaching consultant adopts a structured yet flexible approach grounded in the proven PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle. This ensures a continuous improvement framework that drives tangible results and sustainable leadership growth.

      1

      Clarify priorities

We begin by identifying your most important leadership challenges, priorities and desired outcomes. From there, we agree clear goals for the coaching engagement.

      2

      Build actions

We build a practical action plan that creates accountability and keeps progress visible between sessions for both you and your executive coach.

      3

      Review progress

Through regular, confidential executive coaching sessions, we provide a safe and challenging environment for you to explore ideas, develop new perspectives, and refine your leadership skills.

      4

      Apply and refine

We support you in applying new strategies and behaviours within your professional environment, review what is working, and refine the approach so the coaching remains practical, relevant and results-focused.

This iterative PDCA cycle, combined with the accountability provided by the action log, ensures that your executive coaching is not just insightful but also action-oriented and results-driven. We are committed to empowering you to achieve your leadership potential and drive sustainable success for your organisation.

Coaching Can Develop Your Leadership Skills

      leadership skills for business success

Strong leadership is critical in senior roles where decisions, communication and behaviour have a wider organisational impact. A crucial role of an executive coach is helping leaders develop strong leadership skills needed to manage people, teams, and projects more effectively. These skills within the organisation make it easier to deploy new ideas and manage change with less risk or disruption to business-as-usual activities. Research continues to highlight the wider benefits of executive coaching for the workforce, including improved performance, communication, and employee engagement.

Through one-to-one executive coaching, leaders can improve their communication, handle difficult conversations, solve problems, and delegate responsibilities effectively.

Your coach can teach you how to communicate effectively with colleagues, employees, customers, and other stakeholders while building trust and respect throughout the organisation.

Improve Leadership Performance with Executive Coaching

      executive coaching excellence

Executive coaching helps senior leaders improve how they think, communicate, and perform in demanding roles. At this level, even small improvements in leadership effectiveness can create meaningful results across the wider organisation.

As an executive coach, I help leaders identify performance gaps, leadership blind spots, and areas where greater clarity or capability is needed. From there, we create a focused and practical development approach that strengthens decision-making, communication, executive presence, and accountability.

The aim is not only to improve individual performance, but to help you lead others more effectively and deliver with greater confidence.

Turn Leadership Challenges into Strategic Opportunities

      leadership challenges

Every senior leader faces difficult situations, whether that is conflict, organisational change, underperformance, pressure from stakeholders, or uncertainty about the right next step. Executive coaching helps you approach these challenges with greater perspective and control.

One of the most valuable aspects of executive coaching is having a trusted, impartial sounding board. It gives you the opportunity to step back, assess issues clearly, and explore solutions that may be harder to see when you are too close to the situation.

Rather than allowing problems to drain time, energy, and confidence, executive coaching helps turn leadership challenges into opportunities for improvement, better judgement, and stronger long-term performance.

      Strengthen Strategic Thinking and Decision-Making

strategic thinking and decision making through executive coaching

Senior leaders are expected to make clear, timely, and commercially sound decisions, often under pressure and with incomplete information. Executive coaching helps sharpen your strategic thinking so that you can make decisions with greater confidence and clarity.

Through coaching, you can test ideas, challenge assumptions, and think more critically about priorities, risks, people, and outcomes. This creates space for better judgement and reduces the impact of indecision, overthinking, or reactive leadership.

For many executives, this becomes one of the most valuable outcomes of coaching: the ability to think clearly when the stakes are high.

Lead Organisational Change with More Confidence

      organisational change management

Periods of change place extra pressure on senior leaders. Whether you are managing growth, restructuring, transformation, or cultural change, your ability to lead others through uncertainty matters enormously.

Executive coaching helps you lead change with greater confidence, resilience, and consistency. It supports you in communicating clearly, maintaining trust, handling resistance, and keeping people focused on the bigger picture.

By improving your leadership approach during times of change, you can lead with greater confidence, maintain trust, and help others through uncertainty more effectively.

      Improve Stakeholder Relationships and Influence

Improve stakeholder influence with an executive coach

Success at executive level depends heavily on how well you manage relationships with stakeholders. That may include boards, investors, peers, senior colleagues, clients, or your wider team.

Our executive coaching services help you strengthen your communication style, improve your ability to influence others, and navigate complex relationships more effectively. This is particularly important when you need to align different interests, manage expectations, or deliver difficult messages with credibility and authority.

When leaders communicate with greater impact and emotional intelligence, they often see improvements not only in relationships but also in trust, alignment, and execution.

      Build Executive Presence and Confidence

Executive presence is not about style over substance. It is about how you carry yourself, communicate under pressure, and build confidence in others through your leadership.

Executive coaching helps you develop the self-awareness, confidence, and leadership behaviours needed to operate effectively at a senior level. This may include improving how you speak in meetings, present to stakeholders, manage difficult conversations, or show up during periods of pressure and uncertainty.

For many clients, executive coaching creates a noticeable improvement in confidence, composure, and leadership impact, helping them perform more effectively in the moments that matter most.

Who Benefits from Having an Executive Coach?

      Become a better leader

The short answer is simple: leaders at all levels of seniority can benefit from an executive coach when they want stronger leadership, clearer decision-making, and greater confidence in demanding roles. Executive coaching is effective because it is tailored to the individual leader, their role, and the organisation’s strategic context.

At Strategic Goal Management, we believe executive coaching is most valuable for founders, directors, managing directors and senior leaders operating under pressure, leading teams, navigating change or carrying significant responsibility.

It is particularly useful when you need clearer thinking, stronger communication, greater executive presence or a trusted sounding board for difficult decisions.

Because executive coaching is bespoke, it can be adapted to suit leaders across a wide range of industries, sectors, and company sizes.

      Why is Executive Coaching Important?

      Executive coaching importance

Executive coaching is important because better leadership creates better outcomes. When senior leaders are supported to think clearly, improve communication, and make stronger decisions, this often leads to improved team performance, greater accountability, and more effective delivery of strategic goals.

An executive coach also gives leaders something they often lack: a confidential space to reflect, test ideas, and be challenged constructively. With the support of an experienced executive coach, leaders can improve self-awareness, strengthen resilience, solve problems more effectively, and lead with greater confidence and impact.

Is Hiring an Executive Coach Worth It?

The short answer is yes; hiring an executive coach is worth the investment. The excellent feedback that we receive from clients is a testament to this.

Our coaching has helped clients become more confident, more self-aware, and more effective in demanding leadership roles. Many also report stronger decision-making, better communication, and greater clarity in how they lead.

Most of the empirical research on coaching shows it to be effective. The studies have been rigorous with most designs incorporating a control vs. training group to determine the unique effect of executive coaching on job performance (De Haan & Duckworth, 2013).
